Norwell was first settled in 1634 as part of Satuit, later known as Scituate. The inland portion of the settlement, located along the North River, became known as โSouth Scituate,โ home to early families including Turner, Merritt, Oakman, Cushing, Vinal, Litchfield, Barstow, Sparrell, and Jacobsโnames still familiar throughout town today.
